The notches are placed above the fret positions of the mostly common e-guitar and concert- / western-scales (24 9/16" (624mm)  to 25,6" (650mm)  so the precisely machined edges can reach the wood surface.

• This makes it easy to read and adjust the curvature of the neck very precisely.
